Ways To Clean The Blinds At Home

Cleaning the blinds is one of the most dreaded chores of most people. Knowing the right way to clean the blinds might help us loathe it a little less. It does not matter what type of blinds you have; whether fabric, vinyl, wood or aluminium, cleaning them is a time-consuming task that we all hate. We have put together some easy and effective ways to clean window blinds.

Pleated and Roman Blinds

The easiest way to clean these types of blinds is to use the dust attachment of your vacuum is the setting on low. Usually, vacuum cleaning is enough for your pleated, roman or any fabric shades.

You can also use a hairdryer with the setting on "cool". Use it to blow any dirt that you can see in the creases and other openings. If you happen to see bugs, try to resist the urge to squish them but use your hairdryer to blow them out instead.

If your fabric shares have stains on them, you may use a sponge or microfibre cloth damped in soapy water. Spatter the stain but avoid getting the fabric too wet. Leave the blinds to dry before raising them.

Venetian or Faux Wood Blinds

Venetian blinds are one of the most popular types of window shades. They are also the easiest ones to clean.

Using a swiffer is a tool that you can use to clean Venetian blinds but we know how these handheld dusters would just move the dust in the air just to get back on the blinds.

If your faux wood blinds happen to be in the kitchen, they have probably collected grease in addition to dust. For a little bit more thorough cleaning, just mix one part vinegar to one part water and use a microfibre cloth to wipe both sides of the blinds.

Vertical Blinds

Cleaning vertical blinds require the same process as the other types of blinds depending on whether they are fabric or PVC. Since the slats are placed vertically, they will collect less dust than horizontal blinds. Usually, just a lint roller you would use for clothes is enough to clean vertical blinds.

If you need to remove grime from PVC slats, use a microfibre cloth damped in soapy water or you can soak them in a tub. Try to avoid abrasive cleaners as these may scratch the surface of your blinds.

A Few Blinds Cleaning Tips

Avoid the washing machine
You will need to be cautious while cleaning fabric blinds. Soaking the fabric slats can cause them to lose their shape. Washing fabric blinds in the washing machine is a definite no as they will shrink or crumple out of shape.

Use clothespin to track slats
When you are cleaning the blinds by hand always keep a clothespin in your pocket. This little tool will come in handy if you are interrupted during your cleaning process. Attach the clothespin to the last slat you cleaned. This will help you to continue where you left off and avoid cleaning the same slats again.

Dust prevention ideas
The main reason why blinds need to be cleaned often is that they collect dust easily. If you can find ways to keep dust in the room low, you may need to clean your blinds less often. If you have pets, brush them often. With less hair falling off pets, there will be less on surfaces. If you have ceiling fans, make sure to clean them regularly. For some reason, ceiling fans are dust-collecting magnets and would just blow dust around the room whenever they are turned on.

To keep your blinds looking great all the time, remember to dust them regularly.
